I've read a handful of darker books, like Flowers of Algernon and it ends with us, and recently saw the movie. And something I can't pinpoint is why even though I liked FOA, I wouldn't want to read it again. It was almost too triggering for me. However, I've read other "sad" books revolving death and loss and seen other sad movies that even though they bring me tears, I'd watch them again. One of them is forest gump. I didn't enjoy the book but the movie, although very cliche I know, can be pretty sad but overall I still love it. Like it's a tear jerker but I don't feel like crap after. Where it ends with us made me feel like crap, and was just too much. But I'm trying to figure out why.
I'm thinking maybe it's not only plot but also pacing. Like in some stories the dark scenes go on for too long? What do you think?

It’s about a flu pandemic wiping out 90% of the world’s population, but I’ve read it like three times. I love the writing style and the way it jumps back and forth in time and weaves the different character’s stories together. And the way it depicts art enduring even in the wake of the collapse of civilization.
