I adored the Anne series as a child and teenager, and started listening to an audiobook version last night that reminded me how much I love the peaceful whimsy of LM Montgomery’s writing, characters, and dialogue. I like that the books aren’t overly sweet and have a sense of humor.

Suggest me something with a similar feeling but that’s more for adults! (Jane Austen is probably the closest thing I can think of, but I’ve read all of them.)

    1. Is it stupid to say the later Anne books and some of LM Montgomery’s other work? Lots of it is very much not for children. Anne’s House of Dreams (which deals with some dark themes like child death and domestic abuse but is still overall very much in the previous tone of Anne), A Tangled Web, and The Blue Castle come first to mind. Chronicles of Avonlea are pretty readable for adults too.

Try the James Herriott books. They are sweet and charming and funny and have that small town feel that Anne does.

All Creatures Great and Small is the first omnibus edition
