Recently I’ve noticed an uptick in books being compared to The Hunger Games again. This happened in the 2010s during the YA dystopian surge and now with the rise of romantasy, history is repeating itself. Anytime I hear that comparison it makes me lose all interest in the book, especially if it’s a fantasy. I absolutely love The Hunger Games series but I’ve noticed that when books are compared to them they almost always lack the social commentary and message that makes THG so good. If there is an arena setting I’d much rather a comparison to gladiators be highlighted. It feels like these books being compared to The Hunger Games don’t understand THG. They feel like they are written from how someone from the capital perceives the games. What book comparisons turn you away from a book?
