Hey all, I want to read more contemporary fiction and find an author that I like so that I can follow their career and have some new material to look forward to. The authors I would say I like the most so far are Herman Melville, Cormac McCarthy, and William Faulkner, basically I’m really into their prose/style and the good stories are an added benefit. Of what I read by them I liked Moby Dick (duh), Suttree, and Absalom, Absalom the most.
What I have NOT liked of what I have read, which sometimes is more important, would be John Steinbeck, Norman Mailer, and Phillip Roth. All these guys had great moments but I never really connected with or enjoyed reading the books, was happier just to have them over with.
What author(s) should I keep my eye on who may have been influenced by/similar in style to (but with their own voice so to speak) these guys? I’d prefer that the authors were alive and still writing. I’d like to find someone who’s still putting out new work regularly, or even every few years (Donna Tartt for example). Thanks in advance!
