I'm a couple of weeks out of a break up with someone I'd been with for just over 5 years. It's been tough, and I've turned to books as a form of catharsis, I think. After the books on my bookshelf stopped calling me, I thought I'd ask here for some recommendations.

I've read through the posts about books to read after a break up, but they haven't spoken to me. At this stage, I'm not looking for the self-help style of book. Just something I can somehow relate to.

For example, since it happened I've read Peter Camenzind by Hermann Hesse and Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver. Both books felt cathartic to read, and I'm looking for more in that vein. While neither delt directly with break ups, they touched on love and loss and feelings of loneliness. I think those are the themes I'm looking for. They also, to me, had notes of how to live your life and move on from big life events. I guess I'm dealing with a bit of existentialism and questioning where to go from here as well, so books that touch on that would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. For me, the best books to read post breakup are about people changing the course of their life (particularly when the MC is older). I like to be reminded that it’s never too late to decide to be happy and it’s never too late to become the type of person you want to become.

I also like books that get me out of my head and allow me to become completely immersed.

{The House at Riverton} by Kate Morton

{The Midnight Library} by Matt Haig

      {Anxious People} by Fredrik Backman

And if you need a hug of a book:

{The Bookshop on the Corner} by Jenny Colgate
