I've been watching the very short lived tv show, Alcatraz, and I'm really enjoying it. I also enjoyed the British show Whitechapel. I'm looking for print media in the same vein wherein things from yesteryear come back. I'm familiar with Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series. It doesn't have to be an actual cop or whatever, but I want the past to play a role in the plot. Other authors I can think are CJ Tudor and some of Simone St. James' works. I'm fine with paranormal stuff, but I don't really want any magic or fantasy. "What if" scenarios are welcome. Bonus points if it's set in the American South.
