Shark Heart by Emily Habeck is set in a world where people can start mutating into animals or give birth to baby birds. I wasn’t sure if it was going to work for me – I think the author has a background in playwriting and a lot of those elements appear in this novel – but I was sobbing by the end of it. There are several threads in this books – a woman married to a man who is turning into a shark, a woman about to give birth to birds, a woman in an unhappy marriage, a woman moving on after tragedy – but the ending was so perfect.
Hello, Beautiful by Ann Napolitano also had me close to tears by the end. This book has some strong similarities to Little Women.
This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub is perfect if you also liked the movie About Time. I was simultaneously delighted and bereaved by this book.

I may get downvoted for this but “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. It made me sob and the overall message has love as a theme or lack thereof.

Two recent books I read that made me sob are [A Place for Us ](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36840397-a-place-for-us)and [Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59366234-maps-of-our-spectacular-bodies). Neither are romance, but I would say they both have familial love and to some extent romantic love at their centers. The latter I would recommend reading a paper copy (or maybe Kindle but I don’t use Kindle so I can’t say for sure) since there are poetic elements in how the text is arranged on occasion that wouldn’t come through on audiobook. It wouldn’t ruin the book without it but it’s a neat element that I enjoyed.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. At one point in listening to the audiobook, my girlfriend bawled for more than 45 minutes. HIGHLY recommend listening as the narrator is amazing.
