I'd like to read about tense relations between nations who are not at direct war with each other (but may find themselves leading to war down the line) who try to negotiate back and fourth, potentially making some progress but progress going backwards sometimes due to their interests going against the other party's interests. The actual dispute doesn't matter. It can be land, oil, religious liberty, immigration, or anything. But I would like it to be historical non-fiction and give me a good understanding on not only realistic negotiations but how these negotiations can easily fall apart in a way that seems realistic.

I recently read a book about an ambassador helping two nations negotiate a treaty, but it was really only made possible because the third party was trying to come off as impartial as possible. I'd like to see examples of negotiations where a third party was not present, and tensions could be felt more directly, possibly leading to more conflict.

    Thank you.
