Hello everyone. For the last 5 years or so I’ve almost exclusively been reading books written in the 1800s or in the first decades of the 20th century. The other day my mom was asking for a gripping novel to read on her vacation, and that made me realize that I’ve spent so much time reading yet my literature knowledge is extremely narrow and limited to one big epoch, and that made me feel the need to branch out more.

As I don’t read as much as I used to because of college, I’d prefer to read ‘important’ or influential authors. I absolutely don’t think reading niche writers is a waste of time, I’m just hoping to become familiar with some household names. I’m trying to read more contemporary fiction, let’s say late 50s/60s to modern day, and that’s because I’ve also read my share of pre-WWII authors (so don’t recommend Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Woolf, etc).

My taste is pretty varied, my least favorite genre is probably romance but if a book is good chances are I will like it. My favorites right now are Dostoyevsky, Camus, and Kafka. Right now I’m reading Murakami because a friend recommended ‘Norwegian Wood’ and I’ve been loving it so far. In fact, I’d love to get a taste of literature from all around the world, not just the US (but great American novelists are appreciated too). Also female voices would be very interesting to me as a woman.

Sorry for the long-winded request, I have a lot of trust in this sub and I’m hoping to find a new all-time favorite!

PS. if you recommend an author, please also tell me from which of their books I should start!
