American History Book for ESL non-American

I’m looking for a good American history book for my buddy in Japan, but all I can seem to find are 750+ page books at a very difficult reading level. He is incredibly good at English, but it would take me a very long time for even me to read a lot of the books I’m seeing. It would also be best if it wasn’t too nationalistic and wasn’t too detailed enough to be hard to understand for a non-American. So basically I’m looking for something at a 11-12th grade reading level that covers any part of American history.
