I’m looking for books written in English about the Habsburg dynasty. My **preference is narrative history,** but since that is not easy to find, please let me know if there are good **historical fiction books** as well! Similarly, if there are **nonfiction books that are closer to narrative in how they read,** I’d appreciate suggestions.
I do have some, like Sisi and The Habsburgs: To Rule the World, The Habsburg Empire: A New History, and Heart of Europe: A History of the Holy Roman Empire (more overlap than on target) on my list, but I’m not sure which are worth reading. It’s tough to find anything and then figure out if it’s worth the read! I have found my local libraries don’t have much in this way, so I don’t want to end up buying a lot of books that aren’t what I want.
I’m most interested in books about the overall family, the Austrian line, and especially Maria Therese, but I’m looking to read ones beyond that. I’m interested in the family and their politics, everyday life, and reign rather than simply books set in the same period/location but unrelated to the Habsburgs. Books about court, relatives, and from the perspective of others (in terms of historical fiction) surrounding them are welcome. I’m not interested in reading about war beyond it being a part of the overall story, meaning I expect there to be discussions of war, related diplomacy, and impacts but don’t care to read in detail about battles.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!
