Anyone can demonstrate at least a basic ability to reveal some implications from quotes/scenes, but what do the writers of good analysis see that others don’t ? How does one efficiently demonstrate comprehension of a text as oppose to falling into the typical case of summarizing the main events in the story. Similarly, i’ve noticed video essays on YouTube fall under the thematic summary category, they identify themes, but never flesh out how the theme is examined by the literature they are trying to analyze. Wouldn’t that end up being more of a review?

I feel in some cases there’s even a feeling you get when you know something is deeper than it seems on the surface but you simply cannot reach at it, such a frustrating feeling.

Sure you could just go back to basic high school English and talk about topic sentence, evidence, explain, link back, etc. But it’s not really helpful in regards to the method of how one explains quotes intelligently.

I guess my real question is, what separates a decent analysis from a phenomenal or eye-opening analysis ?
