OK, I’m reading the Aubrey / Maturin series, which I’m really enjoying and I’m wondering what comes next.
The thing I’m enjoying is the exposition, wider picture stuff – lots to do with the colour and flavour of the time and place, unsentimental, and with just enough action to keep things moving. I cordially dislike Bernard Cornwell, and the Hornblower series – mainly because the characters are generally quite unlikable.
Can anyone give me recommendations of other authors to try?
