Book about police procedural/detective story (ala sherlock or poirot) set in far past or far future/scifi or fantasy setting

It can include stuff like house or lie to me or apothecary diaries, didnt have to be strictly about solving a crime/murder.

Far past I imagine like before sherlock holmes and poirot era, like roman empire, qin dynasty, etc etc.

Fantasy wise I wish they interact with bunch of non humans like dwarf, elf, dragon, etc not just human with magic.
