Literary fiction that creates feelings of fear, dread and suspence. I’m looking for a book that isn’t horror genre, and doesn’t rely on any horror tropes, and preferably deals with realistic events.

I really like horror, but I'm getting g bored of all the genre tropes and conventions that are so often overused.

That got me thinking there's got to be some literaly fiction, with realistic drama that doesn't rely on tropes. Real life, after all, is much scarier than any horror book.

Please don't recommend historical fiction about either world War; I've read enough of them. Any other war is fine.
