The catcher in the Rye is one of those books people love or hate. I feel the books themes of isolation and trauma will be more prevalent to gen z now more than ever. Gen Z is the most depressed generation in history despite living in the most prosperous time in history. Holden Caulfield cynical take screams Gen z despite him being a boomer Holden would be considered an older baby boomer). I guarantee you once tiktok gets a hold of the book it will be more popular that ever. So if you are a musician living in New York City just be carful.

Every generation is uniquely isolated and depressed. Every single one.
Not only that, it’s more relevant as well. But you’re absolutely correct, that book is much more widespread these days.
90s alt rock
Edgar Allen Poe
French Existentialist movement
And so on.
No generation owns depression or isolation more than any other, gtfooo
This is such a weird fuckin narrative to push. Every single generation ever has trauma, cynical teens, and all that jazz. That said, this post is something Holden would probably make if he were gen z, if that makes you feel better.
Gen Z isn’t depressed that’s just some bullshit they tell themselves for attention.
the vast majority of Baby Boomers weren’t even born when the book was published in 1951. Holden would’ve been born in the 30s.
I’m a millennial and distinctly remember how relevant that book felt to me as a teenager when I read it 16 years ago. Just like all the other angsty teenagers who have read it in the last 70 years – there’s a reason they assign it in highschool. Being a teen is hard, but you won’t be one forever.
I fucking hated that book.
Everyone’s phony af no cap.
