I really enjoy learning about big geopolitical issues, events that changed countries and cultures, secret programs, big events, or major policy controversies that affected the future, and so on. Especially if they are sort of written like thrillers, or are otherwise exciting to read.

But unfortunately a lot of books like this revolve around mass death, executions, etc., and I end up depressed.

For example, books like The Jakarta Method, Ghost Wars, The Afghanistan Papers, much of Annie Jacobsen’s reporting, are all fascinating looks into the workings of government programs but they all involve a lot of killing, and I’m trying to avoid that for a bit.

    Any suggestions?
