So throughout my twenties I mostly read literary fiction but having read Cloud Atlas and the constituent stories, I really want to get back to genre stuff.
Can you recommend books similar to each of the chapters? The authors that Mitchell was doing a pastiche of?
I really like chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 but 1 and 6 were good too.

Haruki Murakami was a huge influence on David Mitchell especially on the Japanese clone-cafeteria chapter of Cloud Atlas. Try the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.
I would also suggest more David Mitchell, The Bone Clocks is incredible!
