Books to ease me into learning Spanish as a Spanish-speaker?

I know how to speak conversational. I can read and write it, but it takes me a while to actually absorb and understand. Also, my Spanish is central American in case that makes any difference. There's a lot of slang and made-up words as opposed to the more formal Spanishes of Mexico and South America/Spain.
