    1. **A Short History of Nearly Everything** by Bill Bryson is exactly what you’re looking for. He covers many areas of science – chemistry, geology, astronomy, etc – and the history of scientific discoveries, in a really engaging, accessible, and funny way. One of my favourite nonfiction books ever, and a fantastic intro to science.

    2. William Blum’s _Killing Hope_ primarily about serial CIA interventions worldwide since WW2. Spoiler, there were many dozens and almost none of them did any demonstrable good.
