Most of what I read is classified as "literary fiction". I love its ability to immerse me, with pretty and thought-provoking prose, and its complex and dynamic characters. However sometimes, I wish I could simply cozy up with a wholesome or steamy romance. I have tried, many times, but I have yet to find anything I really like.
It's difficult to place a finger on exactly what it is that puts me off. But what I do know, is that I typically don't enjoy the first person narrator. The female POV often reads as juvenile, even if the characters are adults. I also find the prose to be lacking, so it doesn't draw me in. Another issue with the books I have tried, was how they told more than they showed. I crave believable chemistry between flawed but likable characters, demonstrated through solid dialogue.
I have enjoyed lit-fics with romance, but in those books things usually don't end very well. More tragic than wholesome.
