I just read "Adventures with Charlie" by John Steinbeck and while I found the first 10 pages of him talking about tying down his boat on his expensive New England island he lived on as hard to relate to, I really enjoyed his social commentary (some of it is obviously dated) and how he'd remark on the individuals he has met.

I like stories about work, about life, with a degree of variety instead of the standard characters. A bit adventure, but it doesn't require a road trip like the one Steinbeck is on.

    Can anyone help?

    1. I’ve only read a few of Steinbeck’s works, but you may be interested in Lonesome Dove by Larry McCurty. The characters feel unique and real. The story is slow but allows you to really settle in with the characters and the land. I highly recommend and I’ve never read a western before, so that’s definitely not a pre-requisite.
