I've been reading a lot of these authors lately – specifically Olivia Manning, Anita Brookner, Penelope Lively and Jane Gardam – and the way they are gradually being forgotten is a great injustice. If you like books with meticulous writing, emotional subtlety and narrative clarity there is a vast catalogue of work by these writers available out there.
