I haven’t gotten past book 1 so I can’t recommend the series (yet)— Mother of Learning.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton is great.
And I’m sure you’ve read it, but Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

If I remember correctly Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl had this kind of element in it.

First thing that came to mind was [Never Never](https://a.co/d/6HNrhka). While I myself didn’t love the book, others have.

Children of Memory has one of the most fantastic iterations of this I’ve ever read, but you’d have to read the first two books first and they aren’t short.
