I love twisted books. Growing up I read Ellen Hopkins (love her), Stephen King, Dean Koontz, etc. I've even read Joe Hill and he's great too but I need something better.

As an adult I discovered Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica and wow, what an incredible read. It was so twisted and disturbing I had to set it down several times. But it wasn't JUST twisted and disturbing, the storytelling was great and there were conspiracy undertones that made me go back and read it again when I was done. I think it ruined me for other books.

I want a book that's written well, is incredibly dark and twisted but not "i wrote this book with the sole intent of being dark and twisted", but i want to have to set it down and reevaluate my life choices. I also like when there seems to be a love story brewing and then it turns out sinister. Can anyone help with this? All the recommendations I've gotten from friends or book store workers I can't even make it through the book.

A Child Called It hits all these marks, but it’s a memoir not fiction, which sounds like what you’re looking for.

Regardless, this book left me wholly unsettled.

    3. Code Name Verity is a YA book that’s dark. But it doesn’t get so until the end. I was shook for days.
