So I am an epidemiologist with a master's degree in public health. During election seasons, when people say they support a candidate because of their health policy I can articulate why that policy is a good or bad policy. But that is as far as I can go on providing informed opinions. If someone likes a candidate because of economic policy or housing or environment, I only know what gets blasted out in media but can't actually get into more meaningful conversation besides echoing what my news sources tell me. Granted, that is what the other person is usually doing for supporting their candidate, but I have found that when I converse with people on health policy I can win people over in that realm at least.

I don't have the money to go get advanced degrees in every field so that I can have meaningful discourse on whatever the topics of the season are. Instead, I am hoping that people can recommend books for me to read so that when the conversations pop-up I will have more of a wheelhouse to discuss why something does or doesn't work. The caveat? A lot of these topics are not interesting to me. So not only am I looking for books to learn more from, I am looking for engaging books to learn more from.

If you have a recommendation, please let me know (as well as what the topic is that it will prepare me for discussions about).
