I'm looking for something mature/darker that isn't set in a land of castles, kings, and knights where the only things distinguishable from our own are a magic system and some fantasy races. I'm looking for something unfamiliar, where the world doesn't function similar to ours. For an example of setting but not necessarily tone, R.A Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy being underground is perfection. If there are other series like that, I'm happy to check them out. It is alright if it transitions or delves into something more familiar. The stranger the setting, the better, so long as it is still a good book.
As for tone, it doesn't need to be The Second Apocalypse levels of dark, but I'd like to feel as if the author isn't sugarcoating things and this is a world where actual evil exists.
Any suggestions are appreciated, thank you in advance!
