List a book with a concept you liked, but the execution fell flat. Someone else recommend a book with similar subject that you may like more

Kind of the opposite idea of the "two favorite books" thread.

Recommendation please.
Book: Virgin Suicides. Really a haunting concept of this family of young women completely unraveling. But because it was told from this distant view from the neighbor boys, it really did not have the emotional impact on me that I felt it should have had. I KNOW that was the author's decision to do it that way, but it was unsuccesful for me. Some beautiful prose though.

So please suggest something with a similar dark, haunting theme but that may give more dramatic impact for me.
