I don’t know if my recommendations fit what you’re looking for because they all take place in the past (more historical novels vs. what it would be like to live there now).
But I really enjoy Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See and The Kitchen God’s Wife by Amy Tan (or anything by Amy Tan, she’s amazing).
