Hi all, I’ve decided to read some more books where cranky old men start to become a big old softie, examples I’ve read recently:
- Howard Bowditch (Fairy Tale by Stephen King)
- Col. Theobald Volker (The Wind Knows My Name by Isabel Allende)
- Tom Oakley (Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian)
I get this is probably quite niche! I’m ok with any genre, and even if the old man is a bit part in the wider story (like Theobald Volker is). Thanks!

I like this theme too!
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Akin by Emma Donoghue
Barbara Isn’t Dying by Aline Bronsky
Silas Marner by George Elliot
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce, a bit
I haven’t read Frank and Red by Matt Coyne but it might also be this.
**A Man Called Ove** by Fredrik Backman
You can try “The storied life of AJ Fikry”, I recall the synopsis of that book being similar to what you are looking for.
