I lost my mom at 16 (now 28), and immediately was thrown into a custody battle (long story so I won’t divulge.) I was curious as to if there are any books that do a good job of contextualizing the inability to mourn for a long time, and the difficulty of loosing your parent when you’re on the cusp of adulthood? I make a lot of artwork trying to do this myself but it is super helpful to have readings that help me along the way 🙂

I think the main character is younger, more like 13, but “A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness was gut wrenching. It also has a lot of artwork throughout, and was a pretty quick read that had me sobbing the whole time.

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson is about twins who lost their mother when they were 13 or so, and 3 years later some secrets come out, and I think it’s more about their relationship with each other and coming of age, but their mother’s death is definitely significant to the story and has ramifications for both of them.

I’m sorry for your loss. Sending good thoughts your way. 💙
