After the large amount of recommendations from this sub, I decided to order Gardens of the Moon from my library. I just started chapter six, and wanted to know if I’m supposed to keep track of all those different names for people/places/gods. I like the story so far but there’s too much for me to remember and wanted to know if I’m fine and just gotta keep reading?

    Ps. No spoilers please

    1. Yes, it’s meant to be confusing, overwhelming and heavy.

You’ll maybe start understanding – moderately – what’s going on after the second or third book.

      It’s definitely not for everyone.

I stopped after book three once I learned that the sheer number of POVs increases dramatically towards the end of the series. A series doesn’t need 40 POVs.

Yes. It’s a lot. Personally, I think it’s part of the fun. There is so much to discover  and it makes rerrads very satisfying. But if the story doesn’t grip you it can get quite overwhelming. It kind of depends on your preferences. I’d just enjoy it and not worry too much. A lot of it will fall into place, and anything you miss shouldn’t really affect your overall experience.

    4. Welcome to Malazan. Steven Erickson has stated in recent forwards to the first book that he deliberately started the story in medias res with little explanation of what came before because he wanted to weed out people who weren’t patient enough to enjoy his series. Fans generally agree that the second book, Deadhouse Gates, is a much more welcoming book than Gardens of the Moon, so if you can get through the first book, you’re in for a treat.
