First off, I’m not a big reader, but I’ve been wanting to get more into reading. With my new job I have a lot of down time, and like 2 hours on the train each day, so I figure getting a couple good books would be better than doom scrolling.

I didn’t know where to start, so my friend recommended I read The Sarah Book by Scott McClanahan. I finished it in like 4 days. I’ve never read anything so quickly, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The hilariously childlike depressive tendencies of a grown man are weirdly so relatable. The alcoholism, the mentions of beef jerky, the involuntary nights in Walmart parking lots, and the sweetness of his love despite it all. I loved it. I think that I really liked that average American feel to it, and I’m a sucker for love stories, regardless of how they end.

The only other book I’ve ever enjoyed as much as this is Just Kids by Patti Smith which has some similar themes.

My friend recommended I try Tai Pei by Tau Lin. I’ll give that a go, and I’ll probably try some of Scott’s other books, but wanted to see if I could get any other recs on here..

tldr – I really liked The Sarah Book by Scott McClanahan. Looking for other similar.
