Got back into reading a couple years ago, I really enjoy horror but also dark surrealism. Looking for female authors just to expand my interests, but I am usually disappointed by the suggestions. I didnt like "Nothing but blackened teeth" by Cassandra Khaw, "Bunny" by Mona Awad and I didn't like "Nightbitch" by Rachel Yoder. At all. Tbh those 3 put me back in a slump. I was ANGRY/frustrated at the time I spent on them. Boring, uninteresting main character's, flat dialouge, whiny. I can get past an "unlikeable" or "boring" MC if the STORY is intriguing.
"Memory Police" by Yoko Ogawa is a good example. Didnt care for the MC, but I liked the story even if it felt a bit flat/slow.
For some ideas: I enjoyed "Confessions" "Penance" "Now you're one of us" "Tender is the flesh" "Your Utopia" "The Vegetarian"
LOVED "Earthlings", "Life Ceremonies", "Cursed Bunny", "Lapvona"
My TBR includes "Grotesque" by Natsuo Kirino, "The Graveyard apartment" by Mariko Koike, "Revenge" by Yoko Ogawa
Currently reading "Lonely Castle in the Mirror" by Mizuki Tsujima.
