I was reading Stormlight Archive which is a really good fantasy series and I quite enjoyed the military aspects with the comradery and trials.

I was perhaps thinking of checking out the Sharpe or Master and Commander series, and am looking for other suggestions too.

    1. The Shadow Campaigns series by Django Wexler blends black-powder army combat with fantasy elements. Starts with *The Thousand Names*.

If you’re thinking of reading Patrick O’Brian, don’t be discouraged if you can’t get into the first book right away. Some people find it easier to start with the third book, *HMS Surprise*, and then go back for *Master & Commander* and *Post-Captain*. It can also help with the jargon and details of combat to have the companion book at hand: *A Sea of Words: A Lexicon and Companion to the Complete Seafaring Tales of Patrick O’Brian* by Dean King.

There’s also the Hornblower series by C.S. Forester.

    2. Red Rising by Pierce Brown gets more into military strategy and the like as the series go.

The Powder Mage series by McClellan is very similar to Stormlight Archives in terms of theme and how the battles are conducted.
