I’m currently reading The Stormlight Archives, which was previously recommended to me and showcases a great example of this in the character, Kaladin. But I’m looking for a fantasy novel with a larger focus on these issues. I’m hoping they’re more connected to the overall plot and at least more prevalent in the characters internal monologue.

    2. It’s not fantasy, but I finished reading Kaveh Akbar’s *Martyr*! last night, which deals with those issues. The protagonist is an Iranian-American writer/poet, recovering alcoholic/addict, who is fascinated by death, it’s meaning and/or meaninglessness, and martyrdom. (He’s also in a homosexual relationship, as are several other characters, if that effects the recommendation).
