Here were my top 10 (okay, 11) favorite books I read this year:
- The MANIAC by Benjamin Labatut
- The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
- Pet Sematary by Stephen King
- Southern Reach series by Jeff VanderMeer
- A Guest in the House by Emily Carroll
- Landscapes by Christine Lai
- Cross Game by Mitsuru Adachi
- The Searcher / The Hunter by Tana French
- East of Eden by John Steinbeck
- The Collector by John Fowles
- Poor Deer by Claire Oshetsky
Would love to hear suggestions based on this list. If you have similar taste, please tell me some of your favorite books even if they don't seem to be "similar" to any on the list. If you've read one or more, tell me some that are similar to them in writing style, themes, tone, etc., or blends of different aspects. I'll read all genres.

If you like Hemingway, try JM Coetzee. Same minimalist style, but I personally think his stories are better, a little fresher, more diverse. Disgrace is my personal favourite.
If you liked The Searcher/The Hunter, then obviously the rest of French’s work; her Dublin Murder Squad books are great. They all have that same, pensive nature. And if you liked her work, I’d also recommend Donna Tartt (The Secret History) and Kate Atkinson (Case Histories). Jane Harper is another crime fiction author I enjoy; The Lost Man is particularly good.
If you like Stephen King, try Thomas Olde Heuvelt. His books are genuinely well-written horror stories.
Happy reading!
