I plan to read books like Irresistable (Alter) and The Attention Merchants (Wu). However, they were published in 2017 and 2016, respectively. Obviously these arent old or outdated, but things move quickly in this sphere.

Interested in the effects on society, but more so on the monitization and the fight/manipulation to keep us engaged with their platforms.

    Curious if anyone has:
    1. Any general recs in these sphere of study.
    2. Any suggestions for more recently published (1-2 years old).
    3. thoughts on the two books I listed above before I buy them.

    1. 1. Any and all by Cal Newport

      2. The Shallows – Nicholas Carr – The internet changes how we think

      3. The World Beyond Your Head – Matthew B. Crawford – What does our brain doing while bombarded by information

      4. Dopamin Nation – Dr. Anna Lembke – Everything addiction.

      5. Stolen Focus – Johann Hari – A journalist on what’s going on

      6. Ten Arguments for deleting your social media accounts right now – Jaron Lanier – Jaron talks it through with you

      7. Amusing Ourselves To Death – Neil Postman – Old, but you can type in full sentences so I assume you’re smart enough to extrapolate to modern times.

      8. The Chaos Machine – Max Fischer – If this journalistic (historical) account of what social media does to society doesn’t scare you I think you should start a Tik Tok dance channel.
