I’m looking for something a bit specific, and I’ve had a hard time searching on my own. So, thought I’d try the lovely folks here.
To start, up front, I am not opposed to stories that INCLUDE romance, sex, etc. I just don’t want something strictly in the romantasy genre, and it’s been hard to find a female led story that fits the bill with how popular those kinds of books have become. That’s great for the industry, authors, and readers that love them, but that’s just not what I’m looking for right now.
On top of that, I do not want to read YA. I suppose new adult, if that’s still a thing, could work. But I need something with a bit of maturity to it. Doesn’t have to be grimdark — just not sanitized.
What I do want is adventure, magic, and a strong world filled with characters to love, hate, or both. Like I said, I’d also really prefer if the lead was a woman.
Finally, I’m looking for something that has been published within the last three years (up to five would probably be ok). If it’s an author’s debut, all the better. But looking for fresh stories.
Anyway, I know that’s quite the number of constraints. But I appreciate whatever help anyone can offer! Can’t wait to fall in love with whatever y’all suggest. Thanks for your advice!

[The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/7b42eb9b-da97-43af-a143-e1c4b8254728) by S.A. Chakraborty
A Day of Fallen Night and Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon are very well-written fantasy novels with women of various ages in focus. There is some romance, but it’s definitely not the focus of either book, and there is plenty of adventure, magic, and intrigue.
If you are a fan of Avatar; the last airbender, (or even just know the basics of the plot) I would also definitely recommend the Kyoshi novels. Plenty of wonderful and well-written characters, world building, and adventure.
I would also recommend T. Kingfisher. I haven’t read all of her books, but the ones I have read are excellent fantasy adventure novels with women in their late 20s and 30s as protagonists!
*Nettle and Bone* by T. Kingfisher
*The Stardust Thief* by Chelsea Abdullah (several main characters, male and female)
Maybe also *Spinning Silver* by Naomi Novik (if 6 years isn’t pushing it)
Seconding *Amina Al-Sirafi*! The top suggestion for your request, no doubt.
