And that cliche is the grizzled detective that doesn't play by the rules and is always at odds with their superiors. Grizzled detective fiction is fine enough. It's the main character navigating politics, turning in their badge/gun, and still solving the case that I never want to read again. Authors like Michael Connelly are obsessed with this plotline.
