I would like to read a modern (written 90s-present, but if you know some peak that’s older feel free) horror books that is well written. I want something a bit esoteric, dark academia, heavy mystery, and some great world building. I’m kind of leaning toward something folk or cosmic horror but I’m down for a slasher/thriller or really anything just well written lol. A book that really immerses you in the world, and if possible, actually frightened you.
The most recent horror books I’ve read “Tender is The Flesh” by Agustina Bazterrica and “The Final Girls Support Group” by Grady Hendrix I absolutely hated, didn’t even finish FGSG because of how bad it was. Both were gifted by family who both said they saw people saying great things about the books online. I didn’t dislike the books for their content (I’m aware Tender is considered splatterpunk) I’m a huge horror fan so that isn’t the issue no matter how disturbing, they were both just badly written.
I also read “We Used to Live Here” by Marcus Kliewer and I found it enjoyable enough to finish but it was really derivative (I know it was based on the authors Reddit post, but my feelings are a whole other post).
For further reference I really enjoy classic literature the most, as well as fantasy. I’ve already read all of what you would expect, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Dracula, Frankenstein, Junji Ito, Lovecraft, Barker, etc. so if it’s always on a Top 10 Horror Books list, I’ve probably already read it or have it on my to-read list. Looking for some deeper cuts and newer stuff because I don’t typically read many modern books.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated, thank you xx
