I tend to prefer fantasy/scifi, but I'll take any genre.
I love protagonists who say that they're not a hero but constantly do heroic things. This tends to work better in first person.
Examples:
Murderbot Diaries: MB says it doesn't care about people and panics when it has emotions, but constantly risks its life to save others.
The Scholomance: El talks about how she hates others and has a synergy with evil, destructive magic, and she's destined to destroy the world, but sacrifices her reputation and vital resources to save other students.
Alcatraz Vs. The Evil Librarians: Alcatraz insists that he's a selfish coward, but accepts his role as a leader and never stops looking for ways to save everyone.
Stormlight Archives: Honestly, this applies to Kaladin, Shalaan, and Dalinar. Each of them struggles to overcome the mistakes and misfortunes of their pasts.
