Absolutely needs to check out The Last Kingdom series and the accompanying Netflix show.

    2. The medieval period lasted about a thousand years, so asking for books set during that time period is a bit like asking for book recommendations for anything set between 1024 A.D. and the present.

Ken Follett’s ***The Pillars of the Earth*** and ***World Without End*** are set in the 12th century.

    3. For nonfiction, **A Distant Mirror** by Barbara Tuchman is a history of the “crisis of the 14th century”, including the Black Death and the Hundred Years’ War, that has won numerous awards.

For fiction, if he’s willing to get a bit weird, **Between Two Fires** by Christopher Buehlman is a fantasy horror set during the Black Death that is fantastically written and super immersive.

    4. Anything by Christian Cameron. Chivalry series starting with *The Ill-made Knight” is a great read. (14th Century, war in France)

And then anything by Bernard Cornwell. The Last Kingdom is already mentioned here. Cornwell also has a similar book called Azincourt (15th century, war in France)

I’d choose based on what the type of reader he tends to be. Is he all about wars and battles? Cornwell is very good at that part but not so good on character depth and story, like early Tom Clancy novels. Christian Cameron is the opposite, but not much of a slouch on the battles, either.
