Hey all,
Like many, we studied “The Pearl” in school (early 80’s). I can’t remember all that much about it, bar the ending which spoke to me of hopelessness, despair, and that events can’t be undone. At the time, I found the book to be bleak and depressing, to the extent that I’ve never picked up another Steinbeck. I would like to have a go at another of his works, and would appreciate any suggestions on which one to choose. Thanks in advance.

East of Eden
The Pearl is not like most of his books, though there’s a lot of depression and wryness in his work. To a God Unknown is my personal favorite.
Cannery Row is set during a depressing era in a dead end environment, but it’s very much about the joie de vivre of the working class and down and out. It’s a novella as well and darkly funny.
