I lean towards reading fiction when it comes to reading books. So I would like to understand the kind of things that catches your attention when you read a book. How critical are you in terms of writing or anything else?
For me the coherence and logic of the plot. I don’t really get the specifics of the writing style of the book, etc. I just know that the writing is good enough for me to complete it. I do pay attention to the vocabulary used to learn new words.
Any suggestions on how to become a more aware reader (traits that would set one apart as an advanced reader) is appreciated.

I recently read a book that I LOVED, but twice, the author used “compliment” when he should have used “complement” and that really annoyed me. I enjoyed the book anyway, but how did someone not catch that?
The will of the author dictating what characters are doing/saying.
“There needs to be a misunderstanding – so this character is withholding information any sane person would freely share.”
“This means character answers everything with violence – but now that my MC is in the firing line the mean character has a change of heart.”
I have to admit that I am alert for typos and homophone errors. If I find one on the first couple of pages, I holler, “Who EDITED this?! Why am I not an editor? Somebody hire me, please!”
Also, is it well written? I swear I’ve read better-written fanfic than some published stuff.
