Okay well…. this is awkward. But {{The Road to Jonestown}}. The book shows how The People’s Temple became so popular with devout followers, *because* of the fact that Jim Jones (at first) genuinely wanted to help his followers. And often he would be the only one to help them when no one else would, especially marginalized people like minorities. Of course, it all ends in absolute tragedy, but it is a fascinating read.

Octavia Butler’s “Parables” series is about a post-apocalyptic cult. It’s not perfect- one of Butler’s interests is designing utopian societies, then thinking about how they’d be imperfect. But yeah, it’s a running joke that Octavia Butler’s the sci-fi author who SHOULD have started a cult (it spawned a small movement, but nothing like Scientology)
