I'm looking for romance books where the characters form complex emotional relationships and have an interesting take on what love is or means to them. Not conventional romances, love at first sight or immediate sexual or aesthetic attraction, but something deeper, something the characters can't immediately categorize, something they may not understand or be able to express.

Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano is all about complicated relationships. Some romantic, some family.
The Human Stain – Philip Roth. 72 year old man and 35 year old woman in the throes of passion… complex back story. A real gem.
End of the affair by Graham Green, there’s obsession, jealousy, religion!
Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, really well written story about the respective relationships of two brothers and the unresolved differences between them
