The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin (The Passage, The Twelve, The City of Mirrors).
A U.S. government/military experiment with an ancient virus goes awry and turns into a massive catastrophe. It’s immersive with great characters, solid world building, and an amazing and satisfying story arc. The last 10 or so pages of the final book had the hair on the back of my neck standing up in anticipation. It’s a 2000-page epic masterpiece.
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.”
