I decided to read the book because of me hearing how different it was than the movie that I watched.
Kicked off at the beginning where Rambo was hitchhiking to Madison County. Whereas in the book, it was him going to visit a friend who happened to be dead. The start was different but it ended with the same conclusion as Teasle arrests him.
Once in prison, Rambo was forced to strip naked in the book and change. The movie had him fully clothed. Both the movie and book had him triggered by the sight of the razor because he was forced to cut his hair. The difference is, movie Rambo fought his way out of it and no one died. In the book, he slashed someone open and escaped naked.
Several people died in the book whereas he only killed one person in the movie.
What got me the most was the ending. In the ending of the film, Rambo had a breakdown and eventually surrenders. (The alternate ending had him forcing Trautman to shoot him). In the book, Rambo planned to commit suicide but Trautman kills him.
The personality of book Rambo was a bit of a smartass and a mass murderer waiting to happen. While in the movie, he was a “main man” people cheered on.
