Fiction with vulnerable/blunt characters/situations?

I recently started writing again after a long hiatus. Some critiques I have gotten about my work is to be more vulnerable and don't protect the reader.

So I'm looking for books (fiction) that are good at vulnerability and being really blunt with the reader.

I know an odd request, but any suggestions?
